Mansions and Magnolias of the South
April 10 - April 21, 2007 - (12 days)
Day 1
We leave the maritimes, travelling through Maine, stop for a buffet
dinner before going to our hotel near the border of New Hampshire and
Massachusetts.
Day 2
We journey through the New England States, cross the Delaware Memorial
Bridge to eastern Maryland where our hotel is adjacent to the Cracker
Barrel Restaurant.
Day 3
Travelling south, we travel through the Maryland and Virginia
countryside seeing the Dogwood and Red Bud shrubs by the wayside on our
way to Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Day 4
We leave North Carolina, travel through South Carolina stopping at
Middleton Place Plantation home and gardens. This national historic
landmark has America's oldest landscaped gardens, a wing of the
original home still standing, with scenes from the movies Queen and
Scarlett filmed here. We'll overnight nearby in the gracious southern
city of Charleston, famous for its antebellum homes and treelined
streets.
Day 5
This morning we stop at Riverbanks Zoo & Gardens. Enjoy the
scenic river views as trams whisk us up to the Upper Garden through the
valley slopes to the Visitors Center. Prepare to be amazed as you enter
the eight foot high bricked Walled Garden. Larger than a football
field, this exquisite garden fill the air with scents, color and
textures of plants from all over the world. A 300 foot canal features
cascades and pinwheel fountains, while brick and paved pathways lead to
mazes of formal plantings. In the zoo area more than 2000 animals
thrive in recreated habitants from a coral reef to an African Safari.
Later we travel to the Peach Tree City of Atlanta, Georgia, our home
for the next three nights.
Day 6
This morning we'll travel a short distance to visit the beautiful
Callaway Gardens, have a guided tour of the garden area with its many
varieties of plants and flowers, enjoy lunch there, visit the gift
shop, and later stroll along the spectacular Azalea Trail.
Day 7
We'll enjoy a guided city tour of Atlanta this morning, seeing the home
of Martin Luther King, CNN News and the world of Coca Cola. Travelling
a short distance south, we go to Jonesboro as we follow the story of
Scarlett O'hara and Tara. We'll visit the Road to Tara Museum seeing
original props from the movie, the Ashley Oaks Plantation home, and
touring the home where Margaret Mitchell wrote her best selling novel
'Gone With The Wind'.
Day 8
Travelling north we stop at the Hollywood Animal Park, where we'll take
a safari drive seeing animals that appeared in movies and television.
Then we'll travel into North Carolina along the Blue Ridge Mountains,
enter the scenic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia to Natural Bridge. This
evening, experience the not-to-be-forgotten Story of Creation in light
and sound at this natural limestone arch monument.
Day 9
Travelling through the Shenandoah Valley, we pass Winchester, through
Maryland into Pennsylvania where we'll visit Chocolate World and
overnight in Hershey.
Day 10
We journey through Pennsylvania, then travel the scenic northway to
Albany, New York where our hotel is next to the Cracker Barrel
restaurant.
Day 11
We stop at some of our favorite shopping venues on our way to
Waterville, Maine for the night. This evening we'll enjoy a farewell
buffet dinner at our hotel.
Day 12
We're homeward bound with memories of our mansion & magnolia
tour.
Included: All taxes,
transportation, accommodations, attractions as listed, baggage
handling, all breakfasts, 10 dinners, 1 lunch.
